It is defined in lex.yy.c file but it needs to be manually called by the user. yywrap() is called by yylex() when the input is exhausted. If 0 is seen yylex() will keep reading from pointer yyin. If 1 is returned then the scanning process is terminated. So tab is a way to distinguish the two above cases. According to flex in order to write c/c++ code it needs to be inside: % { ... c/c++ code... %} so for your example: % { int cnt = 0,num_lines=0,num_chars=0; %} So I thing the best way is to write your c-code inside % { %}. If I configure that way then manually #include "y.tab.i" from parse_lex.l right before parse_tab.h this gets things compiled. Not sure how to make that work portably though. Hmm, feels wrong, but this works with both bison and byacc medications given during ect
